System requirements
A Btrfs volume, at least 4GB RAM, DSM 6.1.2 or later.
Functionality
The Virtual Machine Manager is a hypervisor for DSM. You can install virtual machines running Windows, Linux, and DSM.
Installation
Install the package Virtual Machine Manager from Package Center. This adds the Virtual Machine Manager application to the main menu.
This package depends on the Replication Service, which is installed first if not installed.
Configuration
The required configuration starts automatically on first use with a wizard that helps select the volume to store virtual machines and check if the host’s settings are suitable for running virtual machines. After finishing the wizard, the Open vSwitch is enabled, and a virtualization cluster is created on the volume.
Optional configurations are done in Control Panel > Login Portal / Application Privileges and Security > Firewall / Certificate.

Logging and notification
The Log page in Virtual Machine Manager shows detailed logging of what happens with the virtual machines. You can enable email notifications in the Settings page > Cluster Notification tab.
Stop and run
There is no stop or start of a service component from Package Center.
Uninstall and removal
You can uninstall Virtual Machine Manager from Package Center. Before uninstalling the package, consider shutting down all virtual machines and optionally exporting them. Also, it is advised to unmap the free DSM license and any purchased license from a virtual DSM machine if there is one.
Notes
You can back up and store a virtual machine or move one to another DiskStation with the export/import function. In the case of a Windows virtual machine, you can also use Active Backup for Business Agent in that virtual machine.
